Francisco Franco taken to hospital for emergency surgery
Generalissimo Francisco Franco, 82, was rushed from his El Pardo palace to La Paz hospital for emergency surgery to stop very severe internal bleeding. An army ambulance with motorcycle police escorted by sirens sped through Madrid for the six mile trip as doctors reported bleeding and kidney failure. He underwent a second emergency operation in five days at 4:35 p.m. local time.

Hearst ruled mentally able to stand trial
Federal judge Patricia Hearst is found competent to assist in her defense in the San Francisco bank robbery case and a plea is set for November 10. The court rejected a 30 day delay for psychiatric treatment, citing examinations by Drs Lunde Pollack and Singer finding no psychosis or serious mental illness. Hearst is oriented to date, place, and person and understands the charges.

Ford bumped on the head by flag staff at public greeting
At Westover Air Force Base President Ford was struck on the temple by a small flag staff waved by an excited boy. He recovered quickly and continued greeting well wishers before addressing the New England Society of Newspaper Editors in Springfield. The incident did not injure him.
