Five Soviet Soldiers Defect to Sweden
Five Russian soldiers from Warsaw Pact troops that occupied Czechoslovakia defected to Sweden in protest of the invasion. The grupo, one corporal and four privates all 21, hid in an apartment before expressing a wish for political asylum. Expressen quotes them saying they were shocked by the invasion and felt compelled to defect. The head of Sweden’s Aliens Police Bureau said they may seek asylum and would not be expelled. No Soviet embassy comment was available.

Fire Destroys Long Trail Lodge
The 45 year old Long Trail Lodge on Mendow Mountain was levelled by fire around 4 30 a m. Twenty Sherburne volunteers battled the blaze as snow covered the ground. The closed season lodge housed a lounge and dining room and hosted dignitaries such as E G Marshall of The Defenders.
