Leahy Upsets Mallory in Vermont Senate Victory
Democrat Patrick Leahy defeated Richard Mallory by about four percent to become Vermont’s first Democratic U.S. senator in state history. The election also gave Democrats three of five statewide constitutional offices while Republicans held the House seat and key legislative posts. Voter turnout dipped under 55 percent with around 150,000 votes counted.
