Nixon appears to have been elected President with Humphrey conceding after a tight race. The Humphrey campaign left room for a possible late reversal in Illinois or a rare recheck that could alter the outcome. Officials with The News Election Service warned results were generally reliable but noted possible errors in theory.
The forecast calls for rain possible then increasing clouds with a high in the 50s. Tonight will be cloudy and not so cool with a chance of light rain mixed with snow in northern areas and lows in the 30s. Thursday remains cloudy with rain likely and cooler.
Nixon wins Vermont by large margin, giving Republican Davis the governorship and all electoral votes. Vermont leaders shift to GOP as Davis defeats Daley, Wallace does not threaten, while Hoff and other Democrats lose ground. Barre bars Davis’ hometown setback marks a notable vote pattern.
Washington reports Democrats claim comfortable control of the 91st Congress. House likely 244 Democrats to 191 Republicans, GOP net gain only three seats. Senate at 58 Democrats to 42 Republicans with several state seats flipping. Democrats gain in California and Iowa. Incumbents largely held, with a few losses in Pennsylvania Oklahoma Maryland and Ohio. James W. Symington wins a see CONGRESS.
In Bennington County Vermont Republicans bucked the statewide trend winning two Senate seats and the justice ticket while Bennington town stayed Democratic in state and presidential races. T. Garry Buckley led the Bennington Senate tally with 2,782 votes as Madeline Harwood trailed. Vice President Humphrey carried Bennington by about 500 votes and Lt. Governor Daley won here by 2,747 to 2,296. In the county, Buckley and other GOP candidates led, but Democrats won a number of state posts. turnout reached about 5,000 of 8,100 eligible in Bennington with more than 500 absentee ballots.
County races tilt GOP as Carter and Farwell win District 32 in two counties. Ruth Cole narrowly holds District 49 seat. Burns Beatil and Beatty win District 25. Graf rides independent to District 57 victory. Miller defeats Harwood in District 42. Buckley and Harwood secure Senate seats. Voter turnout hits all time highs in Pownal and Shaftsbury amid lively county contests.
Pownal voters approved an interim zoning ordinance 418 to 365 but rejected the measure. They simultaneously kept a mobile home park licensing and regulation law 470 to 316. Both ordinances were approved on primary election day and later petitions sought revotes.
