Princess Margaret Makes San Francisco Royal Welcome

Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon began a U S tour in San Francisco with a key to the city from Mayor John F. Shelley at city hall. A 4 500 strong crowd cheered as they met officials, then attended a private briefing and a Churchill luncheon at the Hilton Hotel with about 1 750 attendees.

Court to rule on Civil Rights Act in original jurisdiction

The Supreme Court agreed to hear the constitutional challenge to the 1965 Voting Rights Act in its original jurisdiction, with oral arguments set for January 17. The decision could enable Black voters to participate in 1966 primaries, as southern injunctions threaten the act’s core registration provision. The Justice Department sought speedy resolution to allow early primary voting by Negroes. The court did not join parallel cases against Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

Volpe Tax Plan Defeated in Massachusetts Senate

Doctors Remove Grenade From Farmer's Back

In Saigon three volunteer doctors risked their lives to extract an egg sized grenade lodged in farmer Nguyen Van Chin's back. Major General James W. Humphreys led the effort with Col. Daniel Campbell and Dr. Anthony Brown assisting. The grenade, fired from a U S M79 launcher, failed to explode and Chin was recovering well after a five minute operation.
