A New York State audit opinion allows firehouse caretakers to also serve as volunteer firemen if their roles are clearly separated. The village board previously barred dual duty due to insurance concerns, prompting leaves and disputes. The opinion may validate current practice and guide a board review, with caretaker First Assistant Thomas McMartin seeking both roles.
