Ancient Greek sun sanctuary found under sea near Halieis
Archaeologists from the University of Pennsylvania locate a large Apollo sanctuary offshore near Halieis in southern Greece. The undersea site includes an early temple, oblong buildings, a stadium starting groove and a 50 foot altar, dating from the seventh to fifth centuries B.C. The find may reveal the shortest known Greek stadium, about 167 yards long.
