Wholesale prices rise 0.8 percent in October

The Labor Department reports October wholesale prices up 0.8 percent led by farm goods and 1978 model cars, signaling inflation pressure. Farm prices climbed 2.4 percent reversing a decline, while transportation equipment costs rose 2 percent. The Wholesale Price Index stood at 196.3, up 5.9 percent from a year earlier.

Snelling calls for national education reassessment

Vermont Governor Richard A. Snelling urged President Carter to convene a constitutional convention on education at the Education Commission of the States meeting in Denver. He argued that despite rising public spending, education lacks clear goals and accountability and urged fundamental reassessment of structures, funding, and objectives to align with American ideals of equal opportunity. He criticized courts and current systems as failing to link spending with achievement and called for a strategic national direction.

U S Moves to Impose Arms Embargo on South Africa

The U N Security Council agreed on a mandatory arms embargo against South Africa and the United States will withdraw two top diplomats from Pretoria and Johannesburg. Secretary of State Vance said the recall reflects U S concern after Pretoria’s Oct. 19 crackdown.
