A new highway interchange opens to the public with a ribbon cutting near the Veterans Home and a motorcade planned on the new roads. The public is invited to attend and join the motorcade, and a photo feature appears on Page 5.
Liberty Union Senate candidate Bernard Sanders tours factories shops and Main Street in Bennington predicting a majority of workers at Economy Graphics support his bid. He argues the campaign ends only when voters are educated on ignored issues and cites 1974 as Liberty Union's coming of age with 30 candidates statewide. He attacks Rockefeller as a symbol of entrenched interests and urges $20 billion in cuts to the military budget to fund senior aid while noting growing but uneven support among seniors and other age groups.
A head on collision on a rural Champaign County road killed six teenagers and left three others injured. Authorities said the youths may have been playing chicken with two cars full of high school students. Names of the deceased include Gary Ackerman and Lyle Williams.
Jeb Stuart Magruder testified he helped cover up Watergate to protect himself and Nixon. He denied stealing money from the Committee to Re-elect the President and said he is deeply ashamed of his role in planning and concealing the scandal.
Joseph Carroll refused on Friday night to release the Mt Anthony Union High School mock election results. He said the Bennington BCA has no authority to publish, despite calls from teachers and principals. The Oct 25 voting involved 450 to 500 students using town machines. The school chief and superintendent urged immediate release.
President Ford met gravely ill Richard Nixon for eight minutes at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. Ford pressed Nixon’s hand and whispered be well, with Nixon showing brief interest in Ford’s Japan South Korea and Soviet Union trips. Doctors said Nixon remains under critical care but is slowly improving as Ford described him as coming along very well.
Vermont Democratic candidates Gov Thomas P Salmon and Sen. Patrick J Leahy visit Bennington Monday for a 8:30 a.m. reception at county Democratic headquarters on North Street then tour major towns to rally support for Tuesday's election. Coffee and donuts will be served.
MONTPELIER UPI The State Transportation Advisory Board adopted a 10 year plan that shifts focus to Interstate highway improvements. Funds for U S 7 may not be available though the board hopes to advance a 9.7 mile Bennington to Sunderland segment and a 1.8 mile Arlington spur if funds are found. Arlington to Manchester work is deferred until at least 1980.
In Vermont, governor candidate Walter Kennedy promises tax cuts while Thomas Salmon defends tax restraint, with disputes over capital gains and layoffs. Attorney general contenders M Jerome Diamond and Kimberly Cheney clash on consumer protection, foreclosures, and criminal penalties amid Liberty Union issues.
Cloudy conditions prevail today and Sunday with high temperatures in the low 50s. Tonight's low will be in the upper 30s.
