Cool Weather Signals Cluster Fly Invasions
Burlington residents face an annual cluster fly invasion as cool weather arrives. University of Vermont Extension entomologist Dr. George MacCollum advises sealing exterior cracks, spraying the house exterior, and using DDT powder in the ratio of one quarter pound per five gallons of water, repeating after 10 to 14 days. Inside, use pyrethrin aerosols daily and vacuum up flies. In attics and crawl spaces, DDVP resin strips help, with careful label reading. Flies do not feed or lay eggs in fall and winter, but search for hibernation sites and enter through small openings around windows and clapboards. Tachinidae cluster flies form dense groups in cold weather, then drift into heated rooms at night. They are not true houseflies.
