Court upholds lawful status of union seniority
The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 that union seniority systems are lawful under the Civil Rights Act though they may perpetuate past discrimination. Justice Stewart wrote that Congress intended this result despite earlier employer bias that gave whites greater seniority than Blacks. Justices Marshall and Brennan dissented.

Slain teacher found near Monroe prison in woods
The decomposed body of missing teacher Carol Ann Todd was found in Monroe State Forest near the Monroe state prison, identified by dental charts after an autopsy showed death from multiple stab wounds. Todd, 28, of Falmouth, disappeared December 12 while visiting with her boyfriend, a Plymouth teacher. Police investigate with Berkshire County DA and state police.
