Five children killed by backyard shelter blast in Valdese
In Valdese North Carolina a 1962 Cuban missile crisis era backyard orb shelter exploded killing five children playing on its steps and injuring a sixth. Authorities suspect gas from a butane tank or gasoline stored in the shelter sparked the blast. The shelter was linked to Ed Garron a local textile executive and was near his home. The explosion scattered debris over a wide area and collapsed the shelter’s roof burying several victims.
