Vallejo California UPI reports a fifty million dollar nuclear submarine the Guittaro sank at Mare Island Navy Yard from a cascade of avoidable errors. Separate civilian crews pumped water into bow and stern to trim the vessel as timing and warnings were ignored. The sub settled in thirty six feet of water during final commissioning, was refloated in three days, and restoration work began. Three House armed services subcommittee investigators quoted conflicting timelines and blamed both Mare Island commander Rear Adm Nor bert Frankenberger and deficient civilian supervisors for the catastrophe.
