Local officials appoint Birkland to Park and Recreation Commission
Bernard K. Birkland of North Adams named to the North Adams Park and Recreation Commission by Mayor Bianco, succeeding long time chair George A. Fairs. Birkland, engraving room supervisor at Arnold Print Works Adams, has worked there since 1947 with a three year interlude at Indian Head Inc. in South Carolina. He and Elaine Bushee have five children. A separate appointment, Walter D. Wood to the North Adams Housing Authority, is noted for his drum and bugle corps ties and as president of IUE Local 200. A tribute to Donald W. McClelland, former Bennington Graded School District superintendent, appears in Times-Argus. Alumni Day honors at Castleton State College include Eugene Smith, Whitehall High School principal, husband of Sally Congdon. Also noted are the novel Force Red by Milton R. Bass, and Mrs. Gladys L. Colburn named regional judge for NCTE Achievement Awards 1971. A Postscript mentions Reuben Levin’s baseball column and Planters Peanuts nutrition booklet offer.
