McGovern attacks Humphrey over secret plan rhetoric in California

Sen. George McGovern assailed Sen. Hubert Humphrey for pushing a secret plan to create peacetime jobs during California campaigning. The dispute centered on jobs and military spending as both candidates courted California delegates amid protests of health and housing issues.

Rutland State Police Rutland drug raid nets arrests

A combined force of state police and Rutland City officers staged a four house raid in Rutland Friday night. At least three people were arrested including James H. Brown 19 Robert A. Heli 19 and James D. Gipe 27. No weapons were found and inventory remains to be examined by the attorney.

Vermont Democrats elect Major and Smithhead co chairs

State Rep Randolph Major Jr of Westminster and Prentiss Smith of Brattleboro were elected co chairs of Vermont's Democratic National Convention delegation. The McGovern organized group won most votes, denying former Gov Hoff a platform committee seat. Constance Kite of Burlington was named credentials committee delegate and Ralph Williams of the Vermont Labor Council joined the rules committee.

Germanies Sign Historic Transport Pact but Aim for UN Ties

In Berlin East and West Germany signed a transport treaty to normalize relations and pave the way for UN membership. The pact covers road rail and canal traffic and marks a historic step toward broader talks with the Soviet bloc. Leaders spoke of easing the Berlin Wall barrier and permitting urgent family travel for East Germans. Talks are set to begin June 16 with potential early next year UN applications.
