Vermont panels reshaped as gun control group ends
In Montpelier the Legislative Council terminated the Gun Control Study Committee after two years of work and diverted its duties to the Penal Code Study Committee. Senator Ellery Purdy, a gun control advocate, called continued existence absurd. The panel drafted 1969 penalties for weapon misuse, later revised into a broader crime control measure by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The House Judiciary Committee pigeonholed the bill for summer and fall study. Also in Montpelier the council confirmed an 11 member committee to study state aid to private education with Purdy as chairman, set to meet June 10. Legislation to fund parochial schools for lay teachers failed in 1969, and several Catholic schools face closure. The Rules Procedures and Budget Committee was abolished, with council functions to be handled by the 15 member panel. Burlington reports a June 8 parish diocesan collection to aid the 1969 Vermont New York Summer Youth Project, a bi racial effort to promote racial understanding, initiated by Gov Hoff and Mayor Lindsay.
