Two sunburned Americans William Unsoeld and Barry Bishop returned to Katmandu after conquering Everest. Hoosick New York two young Vermonters Roland Barrows of 311 South Street and David Erno Jacksonville died from multiple internal injuries after a left curve on NY 7 sent their open convertible over guard rails. Driver Walter Woods II of Wilbraham Massachusetts and Michael Davis of Wilmington sustained serious injuries. Woods listed in good condition, Davis in fair condition. Barrows formerly Brandon, worked at Putnam Memorial Hospital. funeral plans pending. The crash occurred one mile west of NY 7 and NY 22 junction.
The Senate heads into a three day flurry before a Memorial Day break lifting a $840 million mental illness and mental retardation program. It also schedules a $985 million Interior Department appropriation and a debt limit stopgap to raise the ceiling from 305 to 307 billion? to 309 billion. The House plans a two year extension of the Mexican farm labor program. The mental health measure funds community health centers, staffing, research, and education programs for the deaf and mentally retarded.
