Hormel Chosen to Lead Vermont Bicentennial Commission

In Montpelier, James Hormel of Saxtons River was selected as executive director of the Vermont Bicentennial Commission after a tense, contentious session. The appointment follows multiple campaign aides gaining state posts, including Donald Webster as secretary of the Agency of Development and Community Affairs. A search panel recommended Hormel amid concerns he was too closely tied to Governor Salmon, but the vote was 160 unanimous. The commission also discussed funds, with $50,000 in the bank and potential $34,000 from Washington, and a separate request for $2,445 to help reenact the Battle of Rochambeau.

Vermont Governor's Commission on the Administration of Justice puts off financing the Vermont Criminal Information Center. Windsor's $36,000 plan for a street surveillance system is rejected due to privacy concerns. The panel approves $24,000 to operate Lake Side Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center, a $2,914,500 request to hire three dispatchers, and a $20,000 grant for a centralized criminal laboratory facility. Public Safety Commissioner Corcoran opposed the delay but was overriden.
