President Nixon wins a key court round over a Watergate subpoena. A deadline on a second subpoena was met, a third may be appealed, and a fourth may be refused. House impeachment spokesmen criticize Nixon transcripts as inaccurate while Nixon’s spokesman accuses the committee of distorting facts.
Duke Ellington, famed composer pianist who gave Mood Indigo and many jazz to opera works, dies at 75 from lung cancer with pneumonia. He passed at 3 10 a.m. after treatment at Harkness Pavilion. Memorial Fund announced for cancer research. Ellington's career included sacred works, tone poems, film scores, ballets, operas. He led top sidemen and wrote more than 900 compositions.
NEA eyes action before summer as it weighs the Vermont Education Association report on SVSU. Miss Marti Ware says a preliminary NEA staff visit may occur in Bennington once the VEA report is received, with a full course of action decided by the Teacher Rights Committee after staff input.
A 22 year old man described as a “good boy” hijacked a helicopter at the 34th Street heliport at gunpoint. He forced a landing atop the Pan Am Building and demanded a $2 million ransom delivered by a bikini clad girl. The pilot was injured. a second hostage aided in detaining the hijacker. He was held on air piracy charges with bail set at $100,000.
Rt. Rev. William G. Guindon, New England provincial of the Jesuit order until Feb. 1, says he approved of a Jesuit serving as a White House aide but now believes the priest is being used. He told the Boston Globe in a telephone interview from Italy that he supported McLaughlin writing speeches for special assistant Raymond Price.
MONTPELIER Vermont state game biologist McLaughlin plans to quit citing lack of manpower and money in the Fish and Game Department and lack of control over the state deer herd. He urged an antlerless deer season to thin the herd or risk serious damage to Vermont’s deer population.

George H. Gallup Jr may discontinue public opinion surveys on whether President Nixon should be impeached. He will decide in about 10 days after polling the public on the poll’s continuation. He cited due process worries but noted no outside pressure to stop.
St Clair cites White House tape transcripts as showing President Nixon has disclosed far too much and is subject to the law after leaving office. He warns impeachment law cannot be judged by criminal standards, and says public opinion will settle disputes over evidence. Nixon plans Memorial Day weekend at Key Biscayne or Camp David with a radio address on economy.
