Mother Returns Son Medals From Vietnam War
Bronxville mother Louise B. Ransom returned to the South Vietnamese Embassy two medals awarded to her son Lt. Robert C. Ransom Jr., 22, who died in Chu Lai on May 11, 1968 after stepping on a land mine. She told envoy Nguyen Hoan the war harmed South Vietnamese freedom and criticized the government for compelling her son to fight. Hoan accepted the medals and defended the struggle for freedom. Ransom’s parents, part-time Dorset residents, buried him there.
