Mechanical pancreas may replace insulin
Researchers at the University of Chicago test a mechanical pancreas that monitors blood glucose and automatically releases insulin. The device, about the size of a 15 inch TV, attaches through the abdominal wall into a liver vein and has been tested for three weeks on about 10 volunteers. It could treat diabetic coma or surgery cases once approved, but university use is not expected until next month.
