Soviet Mars probe launched while U S Mariner delayed

A five ton Soviet rocket launched the Mars 2 automatic interplanetary station on a six month un manned voyage to Mars, aiming to study solar plasma and radiation. Meanwhile the American Mariner launch was postponed indefinitely for a second time after tests on a control unit. Both missions target a November arrival during a favorable Earth Mars launch window, the closest since 1924. Mars 2 was launched from Earth orbit and is heavier than any previous Mars mission, opening possibilities from orbit to hard landing or flyby.
