Volunteers from diverse backgrounds assist a Swanton dig on a rainy day with locals contributing funds for the crew. Archaelogists and visitors from three New England states help uncover what may be Vermont's earliest civilization traces along Lake Champlain.
At the annual CS meeting the board of trustees was elected with Mrs Edward Houlihan of Manchester Center Rev Richard Shettock of North Bennington Mrs Robert Martha Rudd of North Pownel Jacob Esh of Bennington Miss Barbara Jackson of Bennington and Rev Joseph Quinn of Bennington. Re-elected to two year terms were Charles Bennett of Bennington and Mrs Peg Reynolds. Officers chosen were Mrs Mary Jane Rounds of Pownal president Mrs Jane Gardner vice president Thomas Bushman treasurer and Charles Hennett secretary.
About 20 employees walked out Friday night protesting unfair overtime allocation between shifts at Stanley Tools Eagle Square plant. Plant manager Paul DeConinck called the action unauthorized and said union talks would resume. The second shift remained at work, and organizers planned further action Monday.
The superintendent's office announced a deadline change for filings to BSD director seats. The new cutoff is Saturday May 26 at 5 pm, replacing the previous May 29 date. Incumbents Louis Perrotta and Charles Sawyer are on the ballot. Perrotta will run again while Lovet has not decided.
The junior high music program invites the community to a spring concert Monday at 7 p.m. in the senior high auditorium. Students from grade 7 through junior high orchestra perform percussion improvisations and guitar folksongs under Miss Carolyn Bond and Mrs. Peg Vivona.
Arlington voters used voice votes to redirect twelve thousand six hundred eight dollars in federal revenue sharing from tax rebates and bank loans to bridge and dump maintenance. They also raised fierce criticism of a zoning proposal that would keep most commercial uses scattered rather than in a single district, threatening legal viability without adjustments.
North Bennington principal Robert Kelloge reminds parents of children who will turn five between September 1, 1973, and January 1, 1974 to enroll in kindergarten. Register on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

Vermont officials announce a woodland survival training exercise by 10th Special Forces Group paratroopers from Ft. Devens to scout the potential creation of an infantry Airborne Ranger company. Capt. Bernard Fontaine leads the effort with about 60 Vermont volunteers expected.
Peter Heap of British Information Services told Bennington Rotary Club that Britain seeks progress in Northern Ireland via a proportional representation parliament and a potential Ireland council. He noted four years of strife, 798 deaths, and described Protestant Catholic divides and political aims toward either union with Britain or unification with the south.

The Reddy Hen in Arlington at Route 7 is open 10 am to 10 pm Tue Thu. 10 am to 11 pm Fri Sat due to nearby postings.
Bennington police said a two car collision Friday night at 9 47 at Monument Road and Dewey Street Extension left no injuries though both vehicles were damaged. George Van Santvoord 81 of Bennington drove a 1969 Chevrolet while Karen Maroney 17 of Bennington drove a 1969 Volkswagen. Alice Van Santvoord 79 a passenger was not injured along with Kathleen Cook 15 of Woodford in the Maroney car. Earlier that day at 11 33 another two car crash on South Street injured no one. John P. Troy 65 of New York City opened his door into a southbound car driven by Florence Schempf 57 of Pownal, with no injuries reported.
James P. Hughes born February 21 1900 in Bennington died at Bennington Convalescent Center Friday night after a long illness. He worked at the former Bradford Mill and was a Loyal Order of Moose member. Survived by sister Julia Mertrude and other relatives.
