President Johnson at a White House news conference warned that heartaches and frustration lie ahead as U.S. aims in Vietnam remain limited yet determined. He stressed no change in policy and acknowledged the period will test patience, while noting improvements in national support for the war.
Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, after a 13 day hospital stay, said he would be willing to travel abroad if doctors approve and President Johnson requests. He hinted a possible trip to Vietnam with a long tour, stressing readiness if needed and commending war effort while criticizing antiwar demonstrations. He also noted the conflict’s severity and defended civilian input on strategy.
Springfield UPI report says Education Board chair Harold Ron Raynolds criticizes the transition to new secondary school minimum standards. The standards, set to take effect July 1, will be enforced rigidly from Sept. 1, 1968, with final improvement assessments due January 1, 1968 due to budget timings.
A Bennington County Grand Jury indicted 16 year old James Danforth for second degree murder in the February shotgun death of his father Joseph. A new arraignment date of May 29 was set in County Court. The true bill was returned after 14 witnesses testified to state officials present in Windsor. The case moves from a not guilty plea to a second degree charge alleging Malice only.
Dr Timothy Leary vows to stay at Millbrook estate despite a 300 member citizens group pressuring him to leave. The estate houses the Castalia Foundation for psychedelic research and Leary says they value privacy and wish to live as they choose. The conflict highlights tensions over his residence and activity in the community.

UPI reports a massive allied assault into the Demilitarized Zone using land sea and air to destroy over 5,000 Communists. The three-pronged offensive began Thursday amid heavy resistance as Marines and Vietnamese troops push toward the Ben Hai River and Free dom Bridge. 11,000 civilians in the area are evacuated. Ho Chi Minh turned 77 today.
London dispatch reports Russia began supplying North Vietnam with ground to ground rockets that could strike Saigon and US 7th Fleet carriers. Diplomats say Hanoi gains bargaining power, crews trained by Russians, though installation timing and use remain undisclosed.
