Unfavorable climate fuels industry concerns in Bennington

Industry voices opposition to high tax rates and a personal property tax on equipment and inventory in Vermont. At a Bennington Board of Sisters meeting in the courthouse, industrialists outlined factors hurting competitiveness and discussed proposed assessment formulas. Hanoi Says Talks Possible If Bombing Halts

Paris dispatch reports Hanoi offered to enter a Vietnam settlement talk if the United States stops all bombing and other war actions against North Vietnam. Spokesman Nguyen Van Sao said Washington’s unconditional halt could lead to full peace talks, while Lao rejected DMZ linked concessions. The exchange comes as Harriman pressed for movement toward real negotiations and a potential turning point in the Paris talks.

U.S. Marines claim victory near Da Nang and Hue

U S Marines report 342 enemy killed near Da Nang shrinking the threat to the base while the A Shau Valley operation ends, easing pressure toward Hue. Renault Plant Seized by French Workers in Paris Suburbs

Arlington Man Heads Planning Commission

John M. Moore, contractor and former school director, elected chairman of the Bennington County Planning Commission in Arlington. He presided at his first meeting Thursday night, succeeding Henry B. van Loon of Manchester. Vice chairman is Jordon J. Young of Rupert, with Harvey Carter of Pownal and Harry W. Hayden of Sunderland reappointed clerk and treasurer. Cesar Bertheau of Peru outlined Vermont and county economic bases, as the commission continues to plan with Technical Planners Associates led by Lawrence Moore of Stowe. A federal grant funds the comprehensive plan, with state approval obtained last month.

Churchmen urge change in New York abortion law

The New York Conference of the United Church of Christ adopted a resolution urging liberalization of the abortion statute.
