Burlington Center Educates Disturbed Children to Live
The Josephine B. Baird Children's Center in Burlington reports its strongest progress comes from teaching disturbed children daily living skills. Executive director James W. Cotter Jr. says these youths feel underachievement and rejection acutely. The center runs a 24 hour program with individual therapy, special education, and a group living unit for eight children with house mothers. It now offers residential treatment to 36 children and opened Vermont's first group home last September. The center promotes a learn by doing approach while warning society must provide specialized help to avert more institutions and troubled adults. The private nonsectarian service is accredited by the Child Welfare League of America. board member includes Sen. Allan B. Angney.
