Bennington Kelley Sees School Tax Dip Next Year

Superintendent Howard E. Kelley reports a likely sharp fall in Bennington School District taxes for next year driven by higher state aid and a proposed Mt Anthony Union High School budget. He says a $180,000 tax reduction is plausible if budgets pass. Local leaders expect no tax hike for North Bennington and defend the union budget as prudent and honest.

Battle for Saigon: U S Forces Hit Trapped Viet Cong

In bitter street fighting south of Saigon hundreds of Viet Cong are trapped as American jets and helicopters bomb their positions. Civilian casualties rise with a mortar shell near Saigon's central marketplace killing at least four and wounding seven as Marines and infantrymen report heavy losses on both sides.

Reuther Seeks New Labor Federation If Break With AFL CIO

United Auto Workers leader Walter P. Reuther said he would form a new labor federation if the UAW and other defectors leave the AFL-CIO by December. He urged reform to match modern industry and noted plans to withhold $1.2 million in dues, held in escrow, until a convention considers demands. He also announced a pay raise to $31,340 for June 1.

Rescuers Inch Closer To Trapped Miners

In Hominy Falls West Virginia rescuers advanced to within 250 feet of fifteen coal miners trapped by water in a flooded shaft. A six inch pump edged 1200 feet in as mist limited visibility and the plan to reach the group with a conveyor belt gathered pace.

Negotiators to Start Formal Talks Monday in Paris

In Paris UPI reports United States and North Vietnam agreed to open formal talks with full delegations Monday morning marking beginnings of real preliminary talks toward Vietnam peace. Procedural meeting to set ground rules followed brief technical discussions.

East German release frees American jailed as spy

Peter Feinauer, 27, of West Berlin, freed by East Germany after a 15 year sentence for espionage. An American statement said he was handed to U.S. officials at the wall crossing at 5 p.m. Feinauer, a Providence Rhode Island native, had been arrested Oct 7 1966 and sentenced Sept 29 1967. His mother described him tired and memory impaired but in good health. An American spokesman said the case would be pursued for his early release alongside another American, Ronald Wiedehoeft, 30, a Columbia University art instructor held since Sept 5 for alleged espionage.
