Vermont to graft seeds for future forests with pine stock
Vermont officials report the state is grafting forest trees such as pine and spruce to accelerate growth and improve timber quality. Scions come from 50 to 100 year old trees and are grafted at the State Tree Nursery in Essex Junction before field planting in three locations. A projected 10 to 25 percent faster growth could aid forest industries, with seed crops expected in six years. Parallel work by the U.S. Forest Service and University of Vermont targets maple sap sweetness. An oil boom exercise demonstrated rapid deployment of anti pollution barriers at the coast guard station.
