A condensed church calendar lists Holy Communion and worship times for St Peter's Episcopal and other local churches in Bennington area. It notes services, sermons, choirs, Sunday School, and meetings at St Peter's Wilmington Second Congregational Shaftsbury and various parish events across multiple towns.
Dorothy Elmer of East Middlebury and formerly North Bennington is awarded a $1200 scholarship in the 30th anniversary of Alpha Lambda state Delta Kappa Gamma Society at Lake Dunmore. Elmer, a UVM graduate now in a UVM English master’s program, has taught in multiple Vermont towns and abroad including a 1954 Fulbright in Bremerhaven Germany. The award honors Miss Catherine Nulty, former state president and scholarship chair.
In Montpelier the Vermont Conference of the United Church of Christ staged a sacrificial luncheon for annual delegates. A simple meal cost $1.50 and featured soup bread and powdered milk with no chairs except for the handicapped. Delegates stood to eat while displays and film strips in the hall highlighted world hunger and relief efforts. During meals seven at a time were asked to leave and given a sheet noting that they plus six others had just become statistics of hunger. The message warned two thirds of the world goes to bed hungry and ten thousand children die daily from hunger and malnutrition.
Dr. Joseph R. Washington, dean of the chapel at Albion College, a noted author on religion and Black Americans, will deliver the baccalaureate sermon at the University of Vermont on Sunday May 18 at 10 a.m. in Patrick Gymnasium.
Vermont Episcopal Women will hold their annual convention May 13 14 in Bennington with registration at St Peter s Church. Highlights include a dinner at Mt Anthony Country Club speaker former Gov Philip H Hoff and a Wednesday session at St Peter s followed by luncheon and remarks by Bishop Harvey D Butterfield. The event features elected officers reports prayers and two sightseeing tours for visitors. About 358.40 remains after luncheon expenses to aid Church World Service.
