He recalls Pitcairn Island life with 120 residents earning about 850 dollars annually from souvenirs. He plans a 10 week Pitcairn voyage and enjoys the ship’s quiet bridge with few people aboard.
CAPE CANAVERAL Fla AP a Thor Able Star rocket failed to put the 355 pound Anna satellite into orbit after the second stage did not ignite. The Defense Department said telemetry showed the craft did not reach orbit and it would study radio signals to find the failure cause. The project aimed to map the globe with flashing xenon beacons to aid precise ground measurements.
A nuclear-powered U S submarine due for commissioning collided with the freighter Hawaiian Citizen about 30 miles west of San Francisco near the Farallon Islands. Neither vessel was in serious danger and no injuries were reported. The 300 foot Permit and the 468 foot Mat son Hawaiian Citizen were involved. Cause of the collision was not immediately known.
President Kennedy calls for rapid progress in Laos unity talks as pro Communist rebels breach the cease-fire by storming a royal government stronghold. He warns that delaying negotiations risks a more hazardous situation and prefers not to deploy American forces while seeking a neutral government.
Improving weather brings a wood fire surge in New England. Massachusetts reports 91 fires yesterday with a 65 acre blaze in Salisbury destroying a cottage owned by Mrs. Pauline Keezer and lightly damaging a motel roof. Six Massachusetts towns and two New Hampshire departments fought the Seabrook fire.
Walter Reuther said the Auto Workers Union partly differs from President Kennedy on wage price restraint though they share the general goal. He framed it as a question of emphasis between UAW economists and Kennedy's Economic Advisors, while agreeing on basic policy. A formal UAW resolution was to be adopted at the convention's closing session in Atlantic City.
President Kennedy seeks full clarification from West Germany on exploratory talks with the Soviet Union on Berlin terms. He urges secrecy in allied consultations and warns Adenauer against public debating, while noting U.S. and West German positions on an international Berlin supply lines authority.
The Ben Mont Papers union and management say the production force is nearly back to pre strike levels. Of 208 workers involved, 193 return with 74 salaried employees laid off at the end of the strike also back. Hourly workers are being recalled, with a 10 day window to report.
