Manchester Chamber of Commerce thrives under Mary Heckenberger

The Greater Manchester Area Chamber of Commerce, once a small 1930s board of trade, has grown with a $25,000 budget and about 200 members. President Mary Heckenberger, the second woman in the role, credits past leaders and active programs for a 30 percent membership rise in two years. The group covers Weston to Wallingford and Jamaica to Arlington, funds from dues and a state grant, and plans events like a July heritage ball and basketball game to raise revenue. The chamber seeks broader advertising, a new Route 7 plan, and a comprehensive brochure to showcase local offerings while promoting Manchester as a destination off the highway. The office operates seven days a week in tourist season.
