Birch Wood Craft Through Time at Cowee Factory
The Berlin area plant of Grandfather Cowee, now run by Allen F. Gutermuth Sr. and Jr., evolved from florist picks made from white birch to a range of wood turned items. Birch logs are debarked, cut into varied shapes, then turned on lathes to create beads, pipes, wheels, and more, leveraging birch natural wax as a lubricant.

Birch forest industry sustains Berlin through Beads and Beams
W J Cowee Co leverages white birch to power a craft bead and toy part business in Berlin. The plant burns byproducts for steam and electricity while maintaining pollution controls. Generations of workers, many intermarried, sustain local economy as birch regenerates. Susan King Hall of Southern Vermont College is noted as a faculty member in nearby Petersburg NY.
