Survivor of Lusitania recalls moment torpedo struck ship
Thomas E. Snowden, an 80 year old retiree living in Lynn Massachusetts, recalls the Lusitania sinking fifty years later recounting the 17 harrowing minutes from torpedo strike to the ship's final plunge off the Irish coast. He describes jumping 40 feet into the sea with Brockton born companion Charlie Hurley and spending eight hours in icy water before rescue by a Greek flagged vessel later revealed as a British ship. Snowden stresses the shock of the event, the chaos of lifeboats, and the urgency to save women and children while noting post disaster trips across the ocean and his decision to return to the United States to aid in war boot production.
