In Sofia, four heavily armed Turkish students who hijacked a Turkish jetliner with 63 aboard surrendered to Bulgarian police after more than 24 hours. They freed passengers and crew, demanded political asylum, and called for relief for guerrillas and Turkish banking debt relief.
About 14 people escaped injury when a propane gas tank exploded and destroyed a hut one third up Mt Washington in Pinkham Notch New Hampshire. Jim Mitchiel of the Appalachian Mountain Club reported smelling gas and moving nearby persons 200 to 300 yards as multiple explosions followed. Officials said nine tanks were stored outside, with several found intact.
