Mt Anthony board balks at faculty salary plea at budget hearing

At Mt Anthony Union High School budget hearing the majority of attending teachers urged higher pay but the board refused. Negotiators pointed to rising costs while the instructional staff remained static amid a 2.3 percent expenditure decrease forecast. The total budget is 2.404 million for 71-72 with 1,272 students now and about 1,380 expected next fall.

Caracciola Leads Protest Over Rutland Highway Office Move

Bennington legislator Rep Joseph Caracciola protests Vermont S 42 plan to move the district highway office from Bennington to Rutland. The reorganization would create seven districts with Rutland hosting the main office, a change Caracciola warns will isolate towns like Woodford and Pownal and cut off Bennington County from nearer highway authority. He urges county officials to unite and press the governor to preserve local offices.

Kent State memorial vigil marks anniversary of 1970 shooting

Kent State University students kept a 26-hour watch at the four shooting sites on the campus anniversary. A noon memorial service featured Yale President Kingman Brewster and the Kent State victory bell. The vigil followed a 2,000-strong observance with silent marches and a brief program.

HUD approves Bennington 75 unit housing grant

HUD funding for 75 low income general occupancy units under the Turnkey program is expected for Bennington. The Bennington Housing Authority was told you would learn this week if the federal grant is approved. An official announcement from Senator Winston Prouty is anticipated within days.

Awards announced as Burns wins Pulitzer for history

James MacGregor Burns, political science professor at Williams College, named winner of the 1971 Pulitzer Prize for history. The Pulitzer Committee at Columbia announced winners across 17 categories, with prizes and citations totaling.
