In Montpelier the Vermont House approved the omnibus appropriations bill by voice vote after defeating a conservative bid to recommit. The measure totals about 90.8 million dollars, nearing Gov. Hoff’s request, with debate focusing on education funding and potential cuts to educational television programs.
MONTPELIER Vermont lawmakers near a July 1 deadline as Rep Emory Hebard of A Glover pushes for copies of the reapportionment bill. The House Reapportionment Committee plans three new bills: a 150 member House, a five member legislative apportionment board with future realignment rules, and a housekeeping measure to set district election laws.
Pakistan told SEATO it cannot blanketly support American Viet Nam policies and urged a peaceful settlement. Foreign Minister Bhutto signaled reservations, stressing no military solution and conference-table talks. Britain Australia Thailand backed U S Viet Nam policies. New Zealand and the Philippines expressed support. Also: Sotheby’s to auction a harmless iron maiden, once a torture device, described by a 21-year-old employee.
Rumors swirl in Montpelier that Vermont Fish and Game Commissioner Davis may be ousted as Gov Hoff reportedly will not back his reappointment. Plumb resigns as Fish and Game Board chair citing personal reasons. Davis has served since 1938 and is 55. term ends July 1, 1965.
Washington reports the Johnson administration backs no overall steel price rise citing a productivity study that finds a 3 percent payroll rise possible without triggering higher prices. President Johnson urged steel industry management and union leaders to study the findings, tying prosperity to wage stability.

President Johnson asked Congress to approve an extra 700 million dollars to fund military operations in Vietnam and the Dominican Republic, calling the request nonroutine and a step to halt Communist aggression. He warned funds may be needed beyond June 30 and pledged to seek more if required. The plan followed consultations with key committees and officials at the White House East Room.
In Santo Domingo rebel forces with at least three tanks closed on the U.S. Marine defense zone. Seven Americans were killed and 49 wounded as air and sea troops reinforced the city. American paratroopers and Marines formed a long corridor for aid while rebels seized civilian tractors and used captured arms from sea. The French prepared evacuations as Ruiz Bosch backed Caamano for the presidency and urged U.S. recognition of the constitutional government.
Lake Hancock in Stamford is full and two springs are flowing again after a dry period. Officials warn the improvement is likely temporary and urge conservation as drought and below average rainfall are expected. They will skip reservoir cleaning this spring and draw as little water as possible to retain supply for dry months.
House Speaker Franklin Billings Republican of Woodstock warned that the party could be dead for a long time if Vermont’s conservatives prevail. He voiced disappointment after Woodstock insurance man John Alden won the Young Republican Club presidency at Stowe by a 3 to 1 margin, defeating James Sanderson of East Burke. Billings withheld endorsement of Sanderson due to not being a Young GOP member, arguing a GOP revival is needed in Vermont amid shifting party identity.
A Holyoke woman 19 and her mother 70 from Sherbrooke Quebec died when their car collided with a sand filled dump truck on Route 5 Bradford Vermont. Their husbands 21 and 78 were seriously injured and taken to Mary Hitchcock Hospital.
