Bennington native recalls Viet Nam duty and three wars
Bennington native and Marine Sgt. John J. Schnurr and his wife and two children report to Hawaii for a three year tour in March 1965. He soon sails to Okinawa then Viet Nam to defend Chu Lai and take part in large operations Double Eagle and Harvest Moon. The veteran, who also served in World War II and Korea, notes jungle fighting, harsh heat, disease and booby traps as constant hazards and says the enemy is best at setting mines while villagers fear cooperation with Americans. Schnurr describes New Life Village near Chu Lai housing 5,000 locals and regular medical aid, and cites antiwar demonstrations back home as not highly impactful. He emphasizes Marines as capable jungle fighters and reflects on improving recruits’ education.
