Strike Closes Vermont Marble Plants in Rutland
About 600 Vermont Marble Co employees walked out after Sunday's vote by the Stone Workers and Allied Products Union over wages and a union shop. Union attorney Robert Manning says a 35 cent hourly hike and mandatory union membership are at issue. Works began with picket lines as federal mediation failed to produce a contract before expiry of a three year pact. Vermont Marble employs about 1,000 statewide and this marks the first strike in 30 years, with a 1936 background of sabotage and rioting in the last major walkout.
