Court Costs End But Fines Rise
The 1969 legislature passes a bill abolishing court costs in motor vehicle and criminal cases. The measure does not lower penalties. Court Administrator Lawrence Turgeon directs district judges to raise fines to offset lost revenue, with districts like Rutland and Burlington already merging costs into fines. Court costs historically covered police arrest transportation, prosecution and jail keep fees.
