The last 1,300 ground troops return to Travis AFB California after 14 years of involvement in Vietnam. Six C141 Starlifters brought them to U S soil with a red carpet welcome. The final planes marked the end of Operation Withdrawal amid cheers and a customs line.
Ex-POWs describe torture sessions by captors in Vietnam era camps. Air Force officers say some torturers enjoyed the job while others showed ineptitude. Reasons given include extracting military plans, propaganda, breaking rules, or thwarting escapes. Many note changes as the war progressed and attitudes shifted after Ho Chi Minh's death. Some express hopes to rebuild North Vietnam and urge forgiveness.
The UPI report notes two planeloads of American POWs freed by North Vietnam arrived at bases in the United States. Seventy-two men returned with 32 released from Clark and Kelly Air Force Base locations, while a total of 587 POWs were freed during the withdrawal period. The crowd at Clark greeted the returning servicemen with leis, posters, and cheers as Col. Benjamin Purcell praised supportive civilians and the returnees expressed gratitude.

Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee chair Frank Church said witnesses in ITT hearings could face perjury prosecutions based on sworn testimony. He planned to review transcripts and may refer cases to the Justice Department. The dispute centers on a July 1970 ITT offer to channel funds via the CIA to influence Chilean politics and Allende's election.
Soviet researchers report a brain region they call detectors of errors that detect and correct mistakes. Natalya Bekhtereva described experiments with electrodes on animals and patients, noting active detectors when errors were made and possible links to navigation and subconscious orientation in humans and animals.
In Atlanta a 17 year old boy admitted killing a 24 year old woman in a re enactment of a television murder mystery he had seen two weeks earlier. Police said Robert Warl Thompson was charged with this crime.

Also nominated Maggie Smith for best actress for Travels With My Aunt, plus Poseidon Adventure holds for a third week with Shelley Winters praised. A separate murder report in Williamstown notes Cathy Louise Freer found bludgeoned in her bed, detective comments comparing a suspect to The Marcus Nelson Murders film.
