Social Workers Need Many Skills In Modern Mental Health Program
A veteran pilot fears street walking, a runaway teen, a boy who sets fires, and a distressed young mother illustrate needs in modern mental health care. Margaret Hanifin, chief social worker at United Counseling Service, stresses the multi skill approach, case-work insight, and family support central to psychiatric social work. The piece notes Vermont’s 83 professional social workers and predicts large future demand, with thousands more needed in mental health across federal and voluntary programs. It also highlights Nancy, a six year old, as a typical case shaped by family stress and the role of social workers in education and preventive services.

Fate of Vermont Children and Youth Committee in doubt
In Montpelier the Vermont House Appropriations Committee weighs testimony from Gerald Greenmore executive secretary and Aline Ward about the Governor's Committee on Children and Youth. The 32 member group, funded since 1963 by federal child welfare grants, faces funding shifts after July 1 1967. Greenmore argues the panel coordinates agencies and informs policy, while Ward stresses a state obligation to youth. The panel's budget rose to 17200 but was cut pending a bill to change its status to legislative sanction.
