Freedom's Way U S A wins Ford bicentennial slogan
Burton Harness and wife Ellen were invited to a White House reception as Mrs Harness’s slogan Freedom's Way U S A was chosen as the nation’s official bicentennial motto. From more than a million submissions in a nationwide contest run by Jack Anderson, the top six were chosen, then voted on by readers. Harness, a claims supervisor from Waterbury, said the idea came on her way to work reflecting on freedoms and government controls. She and her husband won a 1976 station wagon and $5,000 for a cross country trip.

Dial a Jury touted to cut Plymouth County court costs
Plymouth County officials mull Dial a Jury to cut expenses in Superior Court juror service. District Attorney Thomas Flinnerty cites costs over 100000 dollars annually with many jurors not seated. Under the plan jurors would be paid only for days served and could return to work until called. The county could save 30000 to 60000 dollars yearly, modeled after Monroe County New York.
