Champlain Oil Firm Agrees To Clean Up

A Burlington oil company agreed to begin cleaning up two oil leaks near its Lake Champlain storage facilities after Gov. Deane C. Davis pressured action. The plan includes hiring outside help to clear oil near an underground tank and to start an ice harvest within a 1,100 by 75 foot area around a loading tank offshore. Davis chaired a two hour meeting with city and state water resources officials to review steps, including hay soaking, expedited removal, and possible federal consultation to determine if immediate ice removal is needed. A pinhole leak in a submerged tank caused bunker oil to reach the beach, creating a near two-acre spill due to presumed improper maintenance of the top tank's collection system.
