Horns Locked Vermont Deer Dispute Over Range Control

Vermont lawmakers and the Fish and Game Dept clash over deer herd control for a second year. A House Fish and Game Committee vote unfavorably reported a bill to transfer authority from the legislature to the department, with a debate set for next Tuesday. Day outlines a plan for selective waterless days in certain counties to reduce the herd, arguing the herd is too large for the land. The plan would allow a one day antlerless hunt in specified areas, including Bennington, Windham, Windsor, Washington, Rutland, Orange counties, and others, open to non residents. Day estimates up to 8,000 antlerless deer killed under the plan, with total kills around 23,000, about 11.5 percent of the herd. The debate centers on tradition versus science in deer management.
