Gandhian Desai Emerges as India's Prime Minister Pick
Morarji Ranchhodji Desai, an 81 year old devotee of Gandhian ideals, rises to India's prime ministership after a career as a strict abstainer, economist, and long time foe of colonial rule. He praises nonviolence, religious unity, and aims for nonalignment while warning that true ideals must be achievable and consistent with means. Desai's life includes seven years in prison, key roles as home minister and finance minister, and a stubborn belief in Gandhian principles guiding domestic and foreign policy.
