Alston is a straight shooter one of the straightest you la Ever find anywhere. He does no to believe in Sham and never has and when he says something he never tries to shave the Edge of the plate. A i guess ill have to Start working on the Assumption they wont report a declared the perplexed 55-year-old manager watching his los Angeles dodgers go through a pre game infield Drill. The words weighed heavily on Alston and he knew their full implications even As he said them. A i can to pretend they re Here a he went on spreading his hands in a gesture of helplessness. A a in a being absolutely honest about this a i have no More idea of whether Koufax and Drysdale Are Ever going to sign than anyone else has. A fall i know is what i read in the papers. I keep Reading they re coming in one Day and then i read the next Day they re Alston realizes the dodgers will have to play the full 162-game schedule with or without Koufax and Drysdale who won 49 games Between them last year and he already has started looking for possible pitchers to replace them. A Don Sutton Las been looking very Good a he said. A and in a encouraged by the Way Bill Singer and Joe Moeller have been Alston was doing the Only thing he could. Themeles View playing coach Richie Guerin of the St. Louis Hawks said thursday night he believes his team can win the Western division semifinal playoff series by violating a Basic Rule of the National basketball association and going As far As possible with his starting five. With a one game Edge in the Best of five series after beating Baltimore 113-111 thursday St. Louis shoots for its second Victory Over the bullets Here sunday afternoon. Guerin contends that the Hawks Are Strong enough to win the playoff with the same Type of strategy he employed thursday night. In the Eastern division semifinal series where the visiting team also scored a Victory in the opener the Cincinnati royals bid for a second Victory Over the defending Champion Boston celtics in the resumption of their rivalry saturday night in Cincinnati. Using three substitutes for a total of Only eleven minutes Guerin went almost the entire game with his five starters in St. Louis Victory Over the bullets who had won seven straight from the Hawks in Baltimore. The bullets were not at full strength with Kevin Loughery Gus Johnson and Johnny Kerr injured. But the Way Guerin refused to substitute Baltimore still had the manpower advantage. Guerin Len Wilkens Joe Caldwell Zelmo Beaty and Bill Bridges were the five starters for St. Louis who played the Iron Man role. There have been various reports on the salaries Koufax and Drysdale Drew from the dodgers last year. In most of those reports Koufax always is credited with having received the higher sum. That was not the Case however. Each Drew the same salary to the Penny last year a $70,000. The dodgers last offer to their two holdouts was $105,000 to Koufax and $95,000 to Drysdale and there is every indication that could be the final offer. With owner Walter of Malley calling the signals the dodgers look As of they have gone As far As they intend to with Boti Koufax and Drysdale. On the other hand neither of the two pitchers give any sign of capitulating. The season opener now is less than three weeks away and of you had to bet one Way the Best bet would be that Koufax and Drysdale will come to terms eventually. Even of they do saturday however they would not be ready to go when the Bell rings. Not nine innings anyway. And that show Alston is figuring now too.
