Vermonters favor smoking limits and budget cuts says Doyle poll
Vermonters in a Town Meeting Day survey backed limits on smoking in public buildings and favored across the board budget cuts to close a deficit rather than eliminating programs or raising taxes. The poll also showed strong support for the Community College, and Gov. Salmon and other incumbents leading in primary races.

VPIRG Middlebury Chapter Effort Collapses
VPIRG's Middlebury College push failed after the group rejected a direct funding proposal. Director Herman Bluestein said VPIRG will accept only a negative check-off system, adding students can exempt themselves or seek refunds. The plan was opposed by the Environmental Quality group that sponsored it. The negative check-off is used at six of VPIRG's seven colleges. Vermont Technical College may withdraw. The University of Vermont already uses the system, with trustees approving it last year.
