Montpelier Vermont Gov. Philip Hoff said a decision to restore passenger rail from Montreal to New York hinges on New York City funding. He noted Mayor John Lindsay recently indicated willingness to subsidize, but without city aid the plan remains a mute issue.
Italian security officials began checking 300 names linked to Giorgio Rinaldi and his alleged spy ring. US CIA reports allege Americans listed by Rinaldi as code names may be active or potential recruits across Europe and the Middle East. Rinaldi, a parachutist and self styled spy, and his wife Angela face possible life terms if convicted.
More than 100 Warren Wire Co workers at the Center Pownal plant walked out in protest after the firing of Terry Carey for refusing to operate a new chopping machine. The strike involved Local 6614 United Steelworkers and company management declined comment. A picket line formed as the dispute escalated this morning.
Supt Howard F Kelley was re hired at the Bennington South Supervisory Union annual meeting. He earned strong praise for his first year’s leadership with harmony and efficiency. Board members Barton Jenks Arthur Wickenden and Ronald Knapp testified to his achievements. Knapp stepped down as chair while Wickenden was elected to succeed him Stewart Allen was named vice chair Franklin Frantz became union clerk. The board also approved plans for a school health council a windfall offer from the state for special education and a new snow days policy, all pending ratification. The health council will advise across health and education groups civic and governmental bodies and the public. The windfall would provide the entire 10000 federal grant for a unified program of retarded and physically handicapped education with a state funded director supervised by Sleeman. The director would oversee programs for the mentally retarded the physically handicapped home bound and students with speech and hearing impairments. Further discussion of the state offer followed.
Saigon reported the heaviest seven day toll of the war with 2,092 Americans killed wounded or missing and 2,675 Communists slain. Fighting intensified along the Cambodian border and near the DMZ as two South Korean divisions joined a road clearing operation in the central coastal plains.
Sen John C Stennis urged intensified Vietnam war efforts including broader bombing of North Vietnam, Haiphong harbor strikes, and increased ground pressure. He predicted troop levels could approach half a million this year and said more troops were likely beyond plans. He also questioned reduced troop requests and cited joint chiefs figures.
A columnist opinion on the film Ulysses appears on page 4 while page 8 reports Gov Hoff urging a policy statement on private school status. Page 9 notes Bennington Museum receiving a $10,000 bequest and announces a new edition of The Arlington Eagle.
State Police detained two teenagers after gunfire struck a Syracuse to New York City bus, a Schenectady to Rochester bus, and a car near Auriesville Shrine on the Thruway. Barbara W. Hadden, 20, of Wappingers Falls, suffered cuts from shattered glass but was not hospitalized. The car’s gas tank was hit. bus damage details were uncertain.
