Survey of Bennington Fallout Shelters Reveals Shortage
Alfred E. Arnold, Bennington civil defense chair, announced partial completion of phase two of a survey by Dufresne Henry Engineering Corp on 40 to 50 buildings. They estimate capacity and protection, rating with ratios up to 1000 to 1, with most buildings around 20 to 1 or better. Phase two also estimates transient populations and space, walls, floors, and construction. The third phase will involve detailed reviews of selected buildings and recommendations to boost protection. Local emergency supplies, including wheat, water, toilets, and comms gear, are expected from the federal government in April, with permits needed from building owners. A volunteer is sought to handle program details. The Rev. Donald A. Webster explained engineers revisited St Peter's Episcopal Church to consider floor-safe improvements but no federal aid is available now. The church plans may shift if funding becomes possible.
