Cincinnati jail break blamed on overcrowding and understaffing

Hamilton County Sheriff Dan Tehan blamed the mass breakout at the Hamilton County Jail on overcrowding and understaffing. Fifteen of 24 escapees remained at large as authorities pursued suspects, with a woman visitor allegedly smuggling a gun to a prisoner. The jail, built in 1917 for 150 inmates, held about 272 with seven guards on duty.

Labor May Boycott Pay Board Over Wage Controls

Three of five labor members including AFL-CIO chief Meany plan to quit and push a union walkout from the Pay Board. The move comes after the board cut a West Coast longshoremen contract and amid threats of a broader dock strike led by Harry Bridges. The group seeks a consensus at a wartime labor council meeting, with building trades leaders weighing influence.

Bill to close income tax loopholes sparks Senate drive

Democratic Senators led by Gaylord Nelson introduced a bill to cut 21 tax loopholes and raise taxes on high earners by 16 billion dollars. They argue savings could ease property taxes for low and middle income families while opposing a value added tax. The plan targets oil depletion allowances, capital gains at death, foreign earnings, and depreciation rules.

Anderson releases confidential ITT documents on Chile coup plot

UPI reports journalist Jack Anderson released a set of 82 confidential ITT papers alleging the company sought to block Salvador Allende from becoming Chile’s president. The documents cite meetings with CIA and White House officials and outline efforts to mobilize U.S. industries to trigger an economic collapse. ITT invested $95 million in Chile. ITT denies collusion, while the White House says it does not act with private firms in foreign policy.
